Long-time ZY BMX Official, Ruel “Wormz” Smith, not only destroys city streets on his bike, but he also rips it up with his band, BIG GRIN.  Wormz is the lead singer / guitarist for the Brooklyn-based indy punk band (formerly called shoeboxinabucket).  Keep an ear open for them rockin’ out at bars and music joints throughout NYC, Philly and Boston.  Peep their MySpace page for more.

After winning the most recent stop of the AST Dew Tour in SLC, ZY Official Chaz Ortiz headed south of the border this past weekend to compete in X Games Mexico.  He killed the street course all weekend and finished in 2nd place earning a silver medal behind gold medalist Greg Lutzka (who won by a mere 5-tenths of a point).  Great job Chaz!!

Here’s what EXPN reporter Adam Salo had to say, “Chaz Ortiz  was honestly my favorite kid to watch. The little guy has so much board control it’s absurd. He looked so collected all weekend, like a seasoned pro and yet he’s still a 14-year-old amateur! In the tranny section Chaz did a crowd-pleasing kickflip melon off the volcano. He ruled the Shenzhen gap with a frontside flip, backside flip and nollie backside bigspin. And on the double set Chaz sealed the deal warming up with his stock moves and then stepping up to kickflip front board on the rail and kickflip back lip on it, too.”

On Sunday, June 1st, the inaugural “Bomb Down Broadway” BMX contest was held in NYC. Backed by Zoo York and Skavenger, a hundred or so BMX dogs converged on Union Square for the start of a completely no-holds-barred race through the streets of New York. This underground event was all about who could get from point A to point B the fastest without getting crushed by oncoming traffic or collared by Johnny Law. Sounds simple enough, right? Not even close! With 5G’s up for grabs, dudes were going balls-to-the-wall in their quest to take home some cold, hard cash. The race ended in Brooklyn at Edwin De La Rosa’s shop POST, and when the dust finally settled a handful of riders split up the hefty prize purse. The top three finishers were Ben Duke in 1st ($1,500), Darryl Nau in 2nd ($1,000), and Marco Della in 3rd ($750). Special thanks to Tyrone Williams at DAH SHOP!

Veteran ZY Official, Donny Barley, hit up MTV Studios on Tuesday afternoon to shoot intros for their new skate-focused Shorts on MTV.com. They should be live any day now, so keep an eye out…

This past weekend ZY Official, Chaz Ortiz, WON the fourth stop of the 2008 AST Dew Tour in Salt Lake City, UT.  Chaz rolled into the Toyota Challenge with a 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finish under his belt from the first three stops of this year’s Tour.  Nowhere to go but up, the 14 year-old phenom claimed his first big Dew Tour win on Saturday by dominating the finals and edging out Ryan Sheckler for the top spot.

Chaz is currently sitting in 2nd place overall behind Sheckler who holds a narrow 8-point lead in the battle for the coveted Dew Cup.  The final stop of the 2008 Dew Tour is the Playstation Pro which will go down October 16th-19th in Orlando, FL, with live coverage on NBC.  Mark your calendar and be sure to tune in because Chaz is gunning for top honors, and with the way he’s been skating lately, it’s highly likely he’ll win the whole thing and claim the 2008 Dew Cup.

The future of skateboarding is here, and his name is CHAZ ORTIZ!!
